The Pan Pacific Defense Corps is an organization set up to battle the Kaiju threat through the use of Jaegers. Founded in 2014, the Corps represents an international alliance of 21 nations across the Pacific Rim, bound together by the shared goal of containing, combating and eliminating the Kaiju threat and save humanity from extinction.

In 2014, after the first Kaiju attack on San Francisco, the Pan Pacific Defense Corps was created with the purpose of defending the various countries surrounding the Pacific Ocean that would be under attack from the Kaiju. Soon after, the headquarters of the Pan Pacific Defense Corps was established in Hong Kong, China, this being the first Shatterdome. After Dr. Jasper Schoenfeld pitched the idea of creating giant mechs to battle the kaiju, the Corps were formed to fund the Jaeger Program.

>>Greetings, trainee.
>>Welcome to the Pan Pacific
>>Defense Corps Jaeger Academy. //:

SO, YOU WANT TO PILOT A JAEGER. LET'S SEE IF YOU'RE UP TO SNUFF.

Welcome to Kodiak Island. For the next 24 weeks you'll have the chance to prove that you've got what it takes to be among the few who can pilot a Jaeger. We need capable pilots, so if you don't think you can hack it, better drop out now. The course will follow the following format, so listen up, you have:

1) OFFICER TRAINING:
You will be studying tactics, some engineering, basic kaiju science, etc. Study good and study hard and if you're lucky enough to make the cut, we'll be shipping your sorry asses on to —

2) PONS TRAINING:
There is a mock-pod simulator where you will learn how to drift with your chosen partner. Can't find a partner? Too bad. You might have the physical skills and the brains to go with it, but if you can't bring yourself to work with another human being, then what the hell are you doing here.

3) JAEGER TRAINING:
Alright, you've made it. Report to the test range and get your asses in a Jaeger.

INSTRUCTIONS →
1. Post with your character/canon/preferences.
(Mod Note: Pacific Rim OCs are very much welcome, if not encouraged.)
2. Tag others. Tag a LOT.
3. Have FUN or we'll feed you to the kaiju.

can i just apologize in advance for whatever the internet teaches me wrong

[ while raleigh understands the need to be a well-rounded fighter, part of him is kind of wishing they were still working with the hanbō. he's good with the hanbō, and switching from having one long staff to two shorter sticks is going to take a little getting used to. but get used to it he will.

as the sounds of sticks hitting sticks fill the air, he smiles just a little as he moves with yancy, right stick meeting his brother's with a small crack. okay, so maybe there is something to be said for an exercise that makes them move simultaneously with eventual speed. though he doubts that playing how fast can we go until one of us trips the other up is what the instructors want them to do. ]

(blush)

[personal profile] exhort 2013-08-20 03:46 pm (UTC)(link)
[ he doesn't laugh, though it's a close thing. instead, his smile widens into a shit-eating grin as he matches yancy blow for blow. it's not quite difficult yet--he's been moving and working with yancy for as long as he can remember, after all. but he can see how it could very easily get so soon, what with the moving in a circle while trying to keep the movements going.

but he can handle the new speed yancy's set. and after a moment, he cocks his head to the side as he pushes things a little faster. think you can keep up, old man? ]

[personal profile] exhort 2013-08-20 05:04 pm (UTC)(link)
[ and isn't this just typical them, doing what they want because they can and because they think its better than what they're supposed to do? raleigh thinks they will probably get in trouble for it at some point ( doesn't realize that being able to move fast and keep the motions going is a good thing when you're training to be a jaeger pilot ) but right then he doesn't care. there's a rhythm to it that he sinks into. breathing and circling and whacking at yancy with sticks feels surprisingly natural.

if he knew that their instructor was watching them carefully, he might be a little more anxious about this. especially since one pair of classmates who'd already had enough of missed connections and bruised fingers were staring too. as it is, the rest of the room is pretty much fading away until all he's focused on is the exercise. the fight. he trusts yancy to let him know if there's something else he needs to pay attention to, or if there's some change-up they're gonna do. ]

[ it's not competition in the usual sense of the word. when the becket brothers compete, there's no winner because where's the fun in that? it's gentle teasing and taunting, pushing each other to do a little better, or try something a little different. it's trust, and reliance, and it's what being a brother is all about. it's always been like that for them.

which is why raleigh can read yancy's body language and is moving in the opposite direction even as his brother says change left. it's like being on the playground again, playing the mirror game and leaving the other kids in awe because he yance could outlast anyone.

it's fun, and this time he can't quite resist the laugh that bubbles up out of him as they move in sync around the mat. his head tilts to the side and his eyebrows raise, a silent this all we got? because if they're just going to be enjoying it now instead of exactly following what d'onofrio said to do, they might as well go for broke. ]

i'm literally using your thread with noey right above it to base this

[personal profile] firstranger 2013-08-20 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
[If there's a pair that's standing out this group without question it's the Becket brothers. Caitlin could (and has done this to him several times) talk your ear off about trust and love and the connection between two pilots before they enter the Drift but Sergio watches the new recruits with a different lens. He goes back to his days at the Air Force Academy and then two back to back tours in Afghanistan and the men and women he served with there and how if you didn't trust the person to your right to have your back, then you were going to get yourself and them killed.

That's what he sees when he watches the Beckets, that's what he saw yesterday afternoon in the kwoon and you couldn't pay him to do that for fourteen hours a day like they do to these kids but he's not the one stepping into a Jaeger again. He's the one who's there to make sure the people they're sending out aren't going to die.

That's what he's told his superiors when they asked who should make the next cut.

Sergio finds Raleigh Becket on his own (something that's actually shocking because he thought those two came surgically attached to each other) and yells down the hall of the Academy at him.]

Becket! A word, please.
exhort: (013.)

omg you are so great

[personal profile] exhort 2013-08-20 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
[ the becket brothers aren't quite surgically attached to each other, but raleigh was on his way to go see yancy, so it's easy to see how one might make that mistake.

the fact that he was actually on his way to go do something is only part of the reason he winces before turning around. the other parts have to do with the fact that he's really sore from working out near-constantly, and he had a feeling that either he or yancy would get in trouble for the stunt they pulled in the kwoon yesterday.

it's very tempting to just pretend he didn't hear ranger d'onofrio. but that would probably get him in even more shit. so he turns around and jogs down the hallway until he's closer to his superior officer, stopping to stand at attention when he gets within normal speaking range. ]

Yes, sir?

[Smart move, Raleigh, because D'onofrio knows where you two sleep and if you'd ignored him, then guess who was going for a run at five in the morning in the brisk Alaskan morning.

He jerks his head towards the door to his right, indicating for the recruit to go in first.]

Step in my office, there's something we need to discuss.
exhort: (040.)

[personal profile] exhort 2013-08-21 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
[ well, shit. that doesn't bode well. but raleigh ducks into d'onofrio's office as he's told and tries not to look worried. he was expecting a slap on the wrist for pulling stupid shit, not... whatever this is. the spanish inquisition?

... the italian inquisition? ]

Can I ask what this is about, sir?

[personal profile] firstranger 2013-08-21 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
[Oh come on, Becket if he was going to yell at you, he'd do in the hallway for everyone to hear.

He takes the time to close the door behind him, and gestures for Raleigh to sit if he'd like.]

Yesterday, in the Kwoon. What do you think that was?

[personal profile] exhort 2013-08-21 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
[ raleigh sits and runs through a list of words he might use to describe yesterday. easy? fun? entertaining? no, those probably wouldn't work. and he's kind of confused because this sounds a little like a lead-up to getting chewed out, but he's pretty sure that would've happened already if it was. ]

It was... [ come on, becket, think. ] Natural? I don't know. It just came easy, so Yance and I pushed it.

[Sergio nods slightly, and stands behind his desk, arms crossed over his chest. He knows he's giving the kid a bit of a panic attack but what's the fun in being an officer if you can't torture the recruits a little?]

More than what you were instructed to do. So tell me, where you competing with each other or just having some fun?
exhort: (066.)

no ur gramma

[personal profile] exhort 2013-08-21 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
[ sergio, you suck. ]

It was a little bit of both. [ it's said with a small shrug. it's always a little bit of both with them. ] It's fun to egg each other on, and push each other, you know?

[ he actually doesn't know if d'onofrio would get that. he kind of seems like a hardass most of the time and he's really kind of intimidating. but raleigh figures that if he's drift compatible with and married to doctor lightcap, he's gotta have some hidden soft side. right? ]
firstranger: (i'll keyword this later)

no ur aunt

[personal profile] firstranger 2013-08-22 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
[Sergio does have a soft side. For Caitlin.

D'onofrio nods again and reaches half behind himself to grab a file off the desk. All of the theories about the Drift and Drift compatibility go over his head sometimes. No one ever sat him down and made him take a thousand personality and neuro tests and then make him try and hit Caitlin with a stick. And if they'd tried, he would have had some choice words for them.

Clearly, he was compatible with her. Clearly, he trusted her. That'd be a question of what came first: the chicken or the egg. But this isn't about him.]

I had a talk with Pentecost last night about the two of you.
exhort: (083.)

[personal profile] exhort 2013-08-22 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
[ oh no. this is worse than getting chewed out. this is the part where he and yancy get kicked out, isn't it? he's seen it with other cadets that didn't do the exercises right ( that couldn't do the exercises right, but what's the difference, really ) and that's what going to happen now. he and yancy just fucked up their chances of being pilots and this is ranger d'onofrio's way of telling him that he needs to pack his bags and crawl back to anchorage with his tail between his legs.

raleigh doesn't whimper, but it's a near thing. ]

You did?

[ he looks a little deer in the headlights as he asks that, but his voice is surprisingly steady. ]
