The Pan Pacific Defense Corps is an organization set up to battle the Kaiju threat through the use of Jaegers. Founded in 2014, the Corps represents an international alliance of 21 nations across the Pacific Rim, bound together by the shared goal of containing, combating and eliminating the Kaiju threat and save humanity from extinction.
In 2014, after the first Kaiju attack on San Francisco, the Pan Pacific Defense Corps was created with the purpose of defending the various countries surrounding the Pacific Ocean that would be under attack from the Kaiju. Soon after, the headquarters of the Pan Pacific Defense Corps was established in Hong Kong, China, this being the first Shatterdome. After Dr. Jasper Schoenfeld pitched the idea of creating giant mechs to battle the kaiju, the Corps were formed to fund the Jaeger Program.

Welcome to Kodiak Island. For the next 24 weeks you'll have the chance to prove that you've got what it takes to be among the few who can pilot a Jaeger. We need capable pilots, so if you don't think you can hack it, better drop out now. The course will follow the following format, so listen up, you have: 1) OFFICER TRAINING: You will be studying tactics, some engineering, basic kaiju science, etc. Study good and study hard and if you're lucky enough to make the cut, we'll be shipping your sorry asses on to — 2) PONS TRAINING: There is a mock-pod simulator where you will learn how to drift with your chosen partner. Can't find a partner? Too bad. You might have the physical skills and the brains to go with it, but if you can't bring yourself to work with another human being, then what the hell are you doing here. 3) JAEGER TRAINING: Alright, you've made it. Report to the test range and get your asses in a Jaeger. INSTRUCTIONS → 1. Post with your character/canon/preferences. (Mod Note: Pacific Rim OCs are very much welcome, if not encouraged.) 2. Tag others. Tag a LOT. 3. Have FUN or we'll feed you to the kaiju. |

They're in the Kwoon along with the rest of their afternoon class, three other pairs going through the motions of an exercise their drill instructor calls a Double Sinawali (he avoids pronouncing it out loud, languages is Raleigh's gift not so much his). When he turns to his brother, he lifts the stick in the standard salute and shifts in for the first strike. ]
can i just apologize in advance for whatever the internet teaches me wrong
as the sounds of sticks hitting sticks fill the air, he smiles just a little as he moves with yancy, right stick meeting his brother's with a small crack. okay, so maybe there is something to be said for an exercise that makes them move simultaneously with eventual speed. though he doubts that playing how fast can we go until one of us trips the other up is what the instructors want them to do. ]
you are perfect to me okok
He returns Raleigh's smile, brow maybe twitching a little as he turns up the speed, a challenge that goes bro, wanna show up the rest of these guys c'mon man, keeping steady pace is boring. ]
(blush)
but he can handle the new speed yancy's set. and after a moment, he cocks his head to the side as he pushes things a little faster. think you can keep up, old man? ]
chu!
It's a rush. The momentum getting to you, making you want to go as fast as either of you will allow. He revels in it because it brings an odd kind of peace, the rhythm of the clack clack clack falling in time with his breathing. ]
no subject
if he knew that their instructor was watching them carefully, he might be a little more anxious about this. especially since one pair of classmates who'd already had enough of missed connections and bruised fingers were staring too. as it is, the rest of the room is pretty much fading away until all he's focused on is the exercise. the fight. he trusts yancy to let him know if there's something else he needs to pay attention to, or if there's some change-up they're gonna do. ]
no subject
(he'll find out months later that it was this, or something like this because this isn't competing, this is dialogue and trust and knowing that your partner has your back and he and Raleigh have always done that - school back lot, on the way home, fists up and backs together you wanna mess with the Becket boys you better bring it)
but there's something satisfying about the challenge in keeping time with his brother, pace rising but still steady.
When Raleigh's next strike comes, Yancy meets it and the sweeps their sticks in an arc, body cueing switch it even as he calls out: ] Change left [ and then they're circling the other way around. ]
no subject
which is why raleigh can read yancy's body language and is moving in the opposite direction even as his brother says change left. it's like being on the playground again, playing the mirror game and leaving the other kids in awe because he yance could outlast anyone.
it's fun, and this time he can't quite resist the laugh that bubbles up out of him as they move in sync around the mat. his head tilts to the side and his eyebrows raise, a silent this all we got? because if they're just going to be enjoying it now instead of exactly following what d'onofrio said to do, they might as well go for broke. ]
i'm literally using your thread with noey right above it to base this
That's what he sees when he watches the Beckets, that's what he saw yesterday afternoon in the kwoon and you couldn't pay him to do that for fourteen hours a day like they do to these kids but he's not the one stepping into a Jaeger again. He's the one who's there to make sure the people they're sending out aren't going to die.
That's what he's told his superiors when they asked who should make the next cut.
Sergio finds Raleigh Becket on his own (something that's actually shocking because he thought those two came surgically attached to each other) and yells down the hall of the Academy at him.]
Becket! A word, please.
omg you are so great
the fact that he was actually on his way to go do something is only part of the reason he winces before turning around. the other parts have to do with the fact that he's really sore from working out near-constantly, and he had a feeling that either he or yancy would get in trouble for the stunt they pulled in the kwoon yesterday.
it's very tempting to just pretend he didn't hear ranger d'onofrio. but that would probably get him in even more shit. so he turns around and jogs down the hallway until he's closer to his superior officer, stopping to stand at attention when he gets within normal speaking range. ]
Yes, sir?
no u are
He jerks his head towards the door to his right, indicating for the recruit to go in first.]
Step in my office, there's something we need to discuss.
no u
... the italian inquisition? ]
Can I ask what this is about, sir?
no ur face
He takes the time to close the door behind him, and gestures for Raleigh to sit if he'd like.]
Yesterday, in the Kwoon. What do you think that was?
no ur mom
It was... [ come on, becket, think. ] Natural? I don't know. It just came easy, so Yance and I pushed it.
no ur dad
More than what you were instructed to do. So tell me, where you competing with each other or just having some fun?
no ur gramma
It was a little bit of both. [ it's said with a small shrug. it's always a little bit of both with them. ] It's fun to egg each other on, and push each other, you know?
[ he actually doesn't know if d'onofrio would get that. he kind of seems like a hardass most of the time and he's really kind of intimidating. but raleigh figures that if he's drift compatible with and married to doctor lightcap, he's gotta have some hidden soft side. right? ]
no ur aunt
D'onofrio nods again and reaches half behind himself to grab a file off the desk. All of the theories about the Drift and Drift compatibility go over his head sometimes. No one ever sat him down and made him take a thousand personality and neuro tests and then make him try and hit Caitlin with a stick. And if they'd tried, he would have had some choice words for them.
Clearly, he was compatible with her. Clearly, he trusted her. That'd be a question of what came first: the chicken or the egg. But this isn't about him.]
I had a talk with Pentecost last night about the two of you.
no ur cousin
raleigh doesn't whimper, but it's a near thing. ]
You did?
[ he looks a little deer in the headlights as he asks that, but his voice is surprisingly steady. ]
no ur cousin's cousin
I told him that if he didn't pass you and your brother on to the pons training, then he would be making the biggest mistake of his career.
no ur cousin's cousin's aunt's step-brother's roommate
Really? [ way to sound eager there, raleigh. ] I mean, thank you, sir. It's really great to hear that.
what does that even mean kat :c
Really. Don't thank me just yet-- the next part's the hardest but in my opinion, and don't go spreading this arm, you two are the only ones with an actual shot at it this round.
... kevin bacon?
I think we can handle it, sir.
i dont get it :c AND WHY DID I WRITE ARM IN THAT LAST TAG
You better. I hate being wrong in front of Pentecost.
oh my god have you never played six degrees of kevin bacon
You should put money on it, sir. Yance and I got this.
