PREMISE

All the stories are true. Years ago, the Fae came out because technology was making it harder and harder for them to hide, and it's been a couple of years since the werewolves did the same. The world is changing day by day. Humans and the paranormal live side by side, but it's not easy nor is it simple. While the Marrok has taken great lengths and care to preserve the werewolves' PR front, everyone - wolf, fae, vampire and other - know that it's only a matter of time before the humans start thinking that perhaps the other stories meant to warn of the dark are true.

This is an open post set in the universe of Patricia Briggs' Mercy Thompson series. The books are amazing and you should definitely check them out. More information via this Wiki link. The rules are simple: Drop a prompt, leave a tag, and let's play!

[His easy acceptance pleases her, and Eun returns the kiss with hints of a little more eagerness than normal, automatic acceptance.]

It would be a first but if you're going to indulge my terrible pirate movie then I'm willing to try something new. Do you need any help getting things set up here? Or should I dig around the living room for blankets and such?

[ It feels as though they are finally, gradually, returning to more even ground. This pleases him immensely. ]

Go on and set the living room up. I will be with you shortly.

[ His kitchen experiments with food means that he has been able to set aside snacks. He'll busy himself with putting a tray together for them of assorted mushrooms, some popcorn and potato crisps and then follow her to the couch. ]

[Eun's hand slides off of his waist by way of briefly sliding over his ass with easy familiarity. There's a faint gleam in her eye as she heads off to the living room to get things set up.

It doesn't take her long to find a large blanket for them both, nor for her to rearrange the pillows to make a comfortable little nest for them on the couch. She casts the couch a brief look in remembrance of that first breakfast together, and smiles. Since they are leaving this morning behind it's becoming easier to linger more on all of the good things they have had together. Her thoughts wander back to the night before as well, and she sighs. They do have a long way to go, but despite the complications along the way she is still certain of the fact that she wants him. Wants to be with him.

By the time Asil is ready to join her in the living room, he'll find her settled at the center of the couch, using his remote controls to pull up Netflix and find the movie for them.]

If you enjoy this one, there's a western that I also watch sometimes that's another mid-90's guilty pleasure of mine.

[ He settles the tray of food on the low coffee table in front of them and promptly squints at the title of the movie. ]

Cutthroat Island. [ Easing himself onto the couch beside her at that, eyes fixed on the summary blurb. ] "A female pirate and her companion race against their rivals to find a hidden island that contains a fabulous treasure."

I am now officually intrigued.

[As they've just eaten, Eun makes no immediate move for the food he brings. Instead, she shifts, at once settling against his side and shifting until she finds the most comfortable way to curl up next to him.]

Good. I'm hoping that you'll enjoy it for the romp that is. It would be a little more accurate to call her a female pirate captain, and include her crew as well, but for a blurb it's fairly accurate.

[She glances over at him then, and a small smile lights her face.]

This is one of my favorite movies. You're not obligated to like it but you should know I usually watch it once a year. And will probably subject Kara to it. And maybe others of the pack. [She pauses a beat.] Does anyone do movie nights around here? Because if not we should...

[ He smiles, happy to drape an arm around her shoulder as they settle in beside each other. ]

Perhaps they could mention the pirate captain's name instead. It is not as if only men were ferocious on the high seas.

[ He fusses a little, making sure that Eun is comfortable, though he has no need for the blanket himself. ]

You are more than welcome to add to Kara's watching repertoire. But as for your question - no, the pack used to have performances from the children, but never movie nights.

[Eun feels mostly back to herself, and from the easy smile on Asil's face and his body language, he seems to be comfortable with her as well. There are things to discuss when the morning is further away from them, but for now Eun is happy to have this.]

You'll have to tell me about those performances later.

[She leans forward to snag a handful of popcorn, and then covers her feet with the blanket. The weight of his arm around her is a comfort indeed, and Eun shifts a little more to subtly snuggle into the half-embrace.]

I don't suppose you've met any pirates in the past, have you? There probably hasn't been a lot of interactions with werewolves, since we're not the most buoyant...

The performances were mostly children set to the task of entertaining adults. [ He smiles, leaning his cheek on the top of her head as the opening credits start on the screen. ] Likely I will recount the drama that came after - largely involving our lord of the wolves and everyone's favorite coyote.

[ He's quiet for a bit, caught up in the movie. ]

Pirates eventually find their way on land. Run-ins were rare but not unheard of if your pack was settled by a coastline.

[There are many, many Mercy stories, and Eun knows enough by now to know that if she asks even one question it will mean launching into the whole thing. She lifts an eyebrow to show her interest, but does not pursue the question as the movie begins.

One of her favorite scenes is the very first one, and so she is quiet as she watches Morgan get out of bed with the man who intends to capture her. A sly smile plays on her lips as it becomes clear that Morgan is unfazed by having a gun pulled on her. Both Eun and Morgan know why the gun is no issue, and as Morgan tells the man she's got his balls (musket balls, of course), Eun cannot help but grin and glance up at Asil.]

Two more things you'll have to tell me about later for sure.

[She speaks only when dialogue gives way to action, and turns back to see Morgan and Glasspoole on horses, galloping down a stretch of sand between two land masses to the two sailors and their boat on the beach.]

In time. [ He drops an idle kiss on her temple, well aware of the glance and grin she'd sent his way. ]

I like this Captain Morgan. I can also see why you like her.

[Asil wants to know more of what she enjoys, and anyone who has only known Eun for a day or two would understand in that first scene alone why she enjoys this movie. Her pleasure is obvious in his immediate grasp of the obvious, but also the kiss to her temple as well. The introduction is lengthy enough that she slips in another comment between Dawg and Harry's interactions.]

And that's just the opening. [Eun eats more popcorn, sinking into her heavy nostalgia of a too-familiar movie and theme song she loves without apology.] The male lead is entertaining as well, once we get to him...

[ He watches a little more, content to enjoy the film, Eun's company and her apparent enjoyment. There is something less polished about the execution of the camera work and the staging and he can't help but appreciate the charm it lends. ]

So, based on this, the daughter - Morgan - will be out to avenge her dearly departed father by finding treasure mapped out on his scalp.

[ It is oddly... not unusual. To him, at least. There are stranger places to hide maps. ]

[Eun is impressed by the development of Hollywood's technology and advancements when it comes to camerawork and action sequences, of course, but watching a movie like this reminds her of how much she appreciates the less polished work.

But at the moment, what pleases her is Asil engaging with her over this movie that is near and dear to her heart.]

Exactly. Two birds, one stone. Treasure for her and the crew, and her father avenged in the process. [She pauses a beat.] I have to say i rather miss some of these simple-premise movies. They don't really make them like this anymore.

[ This is a sigh of utter agreement. ]

I have found some of the more expansive film franchises enjoyable enough, but entertainment for entertainment's sake is not a sin.

[ He lifts a brow at the familiar fashions of the 17th century. Wigs and all.

Under his breath: ] I will never understand why Hollywood portrays powdered faces that way. Perhaps it is just the camera work, but the execution loses all nuance.

[Eun's brows furrow in surprise at his comment, and she glances over with curiosity. She doesn't want to talk through this part with Shaw's introduction, but at the same time she is curious...

So she waits. Waits until he's stolen the woman's hair comb and Trotter catches him in the lie of what ship he arrived on. And as Trotter smacks the back of Shaw's head Eun pauses the movie. She hates to pause movies but it seems better to do that than forget.]

How is the powdered face supposed to look? [There's only a breath between her question and the next, which she cannot help but ask.] Wait had you ever powdered your face in that time period?

And mar the beauty gifted to me by Allah? No. Never.

[ He says it with the even tones of someone who knows that he is beautiful and isn't shy about saying it. ]

Not pasty. [ He slides a look at the screen, a pinched expression on his face. ] The European obsession with pale skin is rooted in religion and concepts of purity.

Perhaps I am remembering things with a tinge of nostalgia, but the effect was often more towards achieving the impossible sheen and glow of porcelain.

Not stand-ins for corpses.

[There is no humor in his voice as he mentions the gift of his beauty, and Eun has to say that she appreciates that about him. He is beautiful and he knows it, and does not play at false modesty. Eun never mentions her own beauty but she knows that she is. They both have confidence in this about themselves.

Her lips curve up into a smile however as he begins explaining what was done wrong with the powdered faces of the movie. She eats popcorn, privately delighted by the happenstance, as she is entertained by both his explanation and obvious disdain for the misinterpretation.]

No doubt the way it's been done in the movie is out of ignorance of that fact or a reflection of their view that the practice was ridiculous. If they haven't gotten better about this sort of thing in recent years, someone on the more long-lived side ought to be a consultant for these kinds of period movies. [She eats more popcorn as she glances back up at him, glad that he's never powdered his face. He's not wrong, it would be completely unnecessary on him.] The rest of the costuming doesn't seem like it's terribly off, does it?

That would be rather interesting. [ He entertains the odd image of large film companies employing the long lived folk. Only it is entirely possible that the Fae have people among the humans, or vampires. ] I suspect however, that if one of the longer lived immortals were involved in such productions they have very little inclination to preserving accuracy in favor of ensuring survival.

But to answer your question: as far as I can tell, the rest of the costuming got things right.

[Eun considers his answer for a moment, and it doesn't take her long to grasp his point. Anyone who has any knowledge worth sharing is likely in the habit of flying under the radar whenever possible. Sure, werewolves are out now, but Bran picks who he wants more out in the spotlight. There are those among the wolves at least that while potentially helpful, would have every reason to not draw attention to themselves.]

Well, that's good at least. You'll have to tell me about a couple of her other outfits when we get to them...

[She hits play on the movie again and reaches forward to try the mushrooms he prepared for them, popping one into her mouth before settling against him once more.]

[ A curious lift of the brow. ] Is it something worth noting?

[ He reaches for a handful of chips, half of his attention on the movie and half on Eun. ]

[She shakes her head a little, speaking quietly only to not talk over the movie too much.]

No, they're just dresses, but I like certain aspects about both of them. One of them looks like it's period but the other...well, it's pretty wench-y. I'm not sure if it stands out because of that or because they've somehow modernized the wench style to appeal to the audiences...

Point them out to me.

[ He offers her a smile, the hand he has by her shoulder gently stroking her skin. ]

[One would think after the night before, Eun would be satisfied for a while. But Asil's thumb slides over her skin and somehow manages to hit just the right nerves to send a shiver up her spine. She returns his smile as she shifts to drape an arm across his middle.]

I will.

[The movie continues as they speak, shifting to Morgan being drunk in the hold of her ship. The author implying that the men will not follow her orders, and Glasspoole, one of Eun's favorites, coming down to fetch Morgan before she loses the crew to lack of attendance. Even drunk, Morgan is strong, and Eun appreciates that they only question her ability to captain and bring in money. Not her fitness for the captaincy based on her gender.

The scenes shift, and soon Morgan and a few of her crew are in Port Royal to find someone who can translate the text on her map. Eun gestures at the screen with a lift of her chin.]

There, that's the first one. She looks amazing, doesn't she?

I suppose this is where the leading lady and her soon-to-be paramour meet for the first time?

[ He reaches for some popcorn, amusement in his tone.

However, since Eun did ask about his take on the fashions in the film. ]

The cut of the neckline is oddly inappropriate for a woman of her supposed station.

You would be correct.

[Eun reaches up to steal popcorn out of his hand, and pops it into her mouth.]

I wonder if the people in charge wanted to show off her shoulders or if it's supposed to be a sign of the character not knowing any better how to wear the dress.
