The Pan Pacific Defense Corps is an organization set up to battle the Kaiju threat through the use of Jaegers. Founded in 2014, the Corps represents an international alliance of 21 nations across the Pacific Rim, bound together by the shared goal of containing, combating and eliminating the Kaiju threat and save humanity from extinction.

In 2014, after the first Kaiju attack on San Francisco, the Pan Pacific Defense Corps was created with the purpose of defending the various countries surrounding the Pacific Ocean that would be under attack from the Kaiju. Soon after, the headquarters of the Pan Pacific Defense Corps was established in Hong Kong, China, this being the first Shatterdome. After Dr. Jasper Schoenfeld pitched the idea of creating giant mechs to battle the kaiju, the Corps were formed to fund the Jaeger Program.

SO, YOU WANT TO PILOT A JAEGER. LET'S SEE IF YOU'RE UP TO SNUFF. Welcome to Kodiak Island. For the next 24 weeks you'll have the chance to prove that you've got what it takes to be among the few who can pilot a Jaeger. We need capable pilots, so if you don't think you can hack it, better drop out now. The course will follow the following format, so listen up, you have: 1) OFFICER TRAINING: You will be studying tactics, some engineering, basic kaiju science, etc. Study good and study hard and if you're lucky enough to make the cut, we'll be shipping your sorry asses on to — 2) PONS TRAINING: There is a mock-pod simulator where you will learn how to drift with your chosen partner. Can't find a partner? Too bad. You might have the physical skills and the brains to go with it, but if you can't bring yourself to work with another human being, then what the hell are you doing here. 3) JAEGER TRAINING: Alright, you've made it. Report to the test range and get your asses in a Jaeger. INSTRUCTIONS → 1. Post with your character/canon/preferences.    (Mod Note: Pacific Rim OCs are very much welcome, if not encouraged.) 2. [ In her haste to get a room to herself before group training, Natalie drops her booklet on her way to dispose of her breakfast. She's hardly eaten, but that's not unusual and, thankfully (for her), no one can pester her about eating full meals. Other things take precedence over her appetite anyway.

She swiftly moves through the crowd, unzipping her worn, purple leather jacket.

You have to bend. Gritting her teeth, she repeats the words a few times in her head. ]

[ On the way out, he's passing by when someone close to him ducks below the crowd, and he pauses, watching her pick something up and move again with a raised eyebrow. The face is familiar, he realizes when she straightens, but it takes Leo a second to place her - the explosion, back when he was trying to one of the jaegers. Some rookie pilots had gotten it severely damaged, both of them earning the mechanics overtime pay and themselves an extra long vacation in the infirmary.

He'd been working on some of the wiring near the head of the jaeger when someone came up behind him. He'd assumed it was another mechanic, but she hadn't known what to say, exactly, when he'd updated her on the status of his work. When he looked... well, she obviously wasn't a mechanic. She looked so out of place it was almost funny, until the core exploded. It was unstable from the damage the kaiju had inflicted on it, and they found out later that some idiot hadn't patched it up right. Because the fate of humanity could totally handle a little duct tape on the core of its saviors.

After that, he'd seen her around the academy a few times, mostly after he'd been dragged into pilot training. That's what she's here for, which was kind of obvious and he should have realized it before. Thing is, most pilots don't care how their jaeger works - just that it does.

She's dropped something, he notes, which means she might be a little clumsy. Not the best trait for a soldier... not that he's much better. Again, he's a mechanic, not a pilot. He should be free to be as clumsy as he wants, as long as the machine does its job.

Before he can say anything - and he was going to - she's gone again. Oh, well. No big. He doesn't even know her name, anyway. So, coffee finished, it's off to training. The captain thinks he's too scrawny, so Leo gets extra training in the mornings to try and beef him up like all the other guys. Joy. ]

[ Natalie is arguably a genius. She passed written exams with flying colors and her focus and stamina are off the charts. She's not super muscular, but does have an athletic build after growing up on the gymnastics and swim teams.

Maybe the biggest problem was putting her up against guys who cared more about piloting the jaeger than everything else that comes into play. The way the aliens move, the way the ship itself runs. If she had all the time in the world, she would try to do everything, research to construction. Even though she joined the academy to prove something to both herself and her family, she has to admit that she does have a deep interest in the subject.

But for now, training. Well, that had been her intention until she sees that her usual room (she is a creature of habit) is occupied. ]

[ Breathing out through her nostrils, she juts a thumb over her shoulder. Better find another room. ]

[Sergio doesn't go out of his way to be a dick to the recruits. It just comes naturally to him. It's probably his Air Force training, he started there and was moved into the PPDC as the world needed it. He'd probably be out there now, in a Jaeger with Caitlin except that Brawler Yukon had fuck all with radiation shielding and another trip into one would kill them both. People keep throwing the word cancer around every time he gets near a medic but he's fine now, so he tends to ignore them.

So she does research and development and he's the lucky one who gets to beat the egos out of the recruits.

No really, he actually enjoys it.]

Again, Becket. [It is perhaps the first time that he's ever seen Yancy Becket without his little brother tagging along in his shadow and Sergio makes a mental note to find out where the other kid is later. Today's nothing spectacular, just endurance building and he's got them doing push ups.]

[He slides into the seat across from Hercules Hansen during dinner, without warning or asking if it's alright but they go way back. Far enough back that Sergio was one of Herc's instructors during his time at the Academy (he still teaches actually) and maybe it's because Herc wasn't a starry eyed kid or he just genuinely likes the guy, but you could call them friends now.]

Hansen. [Sergio nods slightly and then doesn't waste any time.] Saw your boy's going to be in my class this group.

[What he doesn't say is: are you sure that's a good idea? Is this what you want? Is it what he wants?]

[If there's a pair that's standing out this group without question it's the Becket brothers. Caitlin could (and has done this to him several times) talk your ear off about trust and love and the connection between two pilots before they enter the Drift but Sergio watches the new recruits with a different lens. He goes back to his days at the Air Force Academy and then two back to back tours in Afghanistan and the men and women he served with there and how if you didn't trust the person to your right to have your back, then you were going to get yourself and them killed.

That's what he sees when he watches the Beckets, that's what he saw yesterday afternoon in the kwoon and you couldn't pay him to do that for fourteen hours a day like they do to these kids but he's not the one stepping into a Jaeger again. He's the one who's there to make sure the people they're sending out aren't going to die.

That's what he's told his superiors when they asked who should make the next cut.

Sergio finds Raleigh Becket on his own (something that's actually shocking because he thought those two came surgically attached to each other) and yells down the hall of the Academy at him.]

Becket! A word, please.

[Just because he's Herc Hansen's son and Sergio actually met the kid when he was like thirteen, doesn't mean that Chuck is going to get an preferential treatment. Which, he gathers is what the kid wants anyway and that's good. Gotta stand on your own two feet kid.

Gotta also be able to run a faster mile than that.

Sergio looks down at the stopwatch in his hand and then back at Chuck. It is fucking cold out, because they're in Alaska so what else do you expect and he's got the recruits running laps.]

[ Once he's met up with his supervisor, it doesn't take them long to find a spare room and get started. Of course, he still gets his butt kicked. It's nothing new - happens every day. The guy insists Leo's getting better, but he sure doesn't see it. Not when he's being pushed back right as the door opens and he barely recovers in time to see who's there - that same girl from before.

She's about to disappear again when the trainer calls out to her, saying they'd be leaving in a minute or two if she wants to stay, a surprise to Leo, since they never leave early. They could train together before joining the group, he suggests, with a smirk in Leo's direction. The guy just loves seeing him suffer at a girl's hand, he thinks with a roll of his eyes. Being here, though, has done a world of good (or bad, depending on your view) for his ego. He will never tell someone they fight like a girl, ever.

With a resigned smile, he gestures for her to come in. ]

One round before group training can't be too bad.

[ the becket brothers aren't quite surgically attached to each other, but raleigh was on his way to go see yancy, so it's easy to see how one might make that mistake.

the fact that he was actually on his way to go do something is only part of the reason he winces before turning around. the other parts have to do with the fact that he's really sore from working out near-constantly, and he had a feeling that either he or yancy would get in trouble for the stunt they pulled in the kwoon yesterday.

it's very tempting to just pretend he didn't hear ranger d'onofrio. but that would probably get him in even more shit. so he turns around and jogs down the hallway until he's closer to his superior officer, stopping to stand at attention when he gets within normal speaking range. ]

Sergio leans into her, nothing major to a casual viewer, just the brush of his hips against hers but it's like the world shifted on its axis when he touches her. What they have, it's not a secret around the PPDC. from most of the world, sure but he does his best to stay out of the limelight, to let the pilots in who are in Jaegers now do all the talking but the world will always have a fascination with the first Jaeger team. Sergio and Caitlin have been inseparable for years, you don't get one without the other. He can't even sleep when she's not in the bed with him, even if she's just sits on her computer next to him all night.

He doesn't like the word soulmates or true love. Caitlin is one half of him. That's what he'd call it.]

[It's--been a while since Jazmine was in school. She stopped at high school because she couldn't afford college even if she wanted to and with the world just getting shittier and shittier, there was never the need for higher education. She probably would've gone if the kaiju had never come, probably gone down to California to one of the UCs or depending on rebellious she was feeling, out to the east coast just to be difficult.

And thanks Yancy for warning her about how absolutely thrilling these classes on kaiju science were. She's having a blast.

She's got the whole end of the table taken up with her notes and books, a pen stuffed in her ponytail and a highlighter in one hand. When Tendo sits, she looks up and smiles when she realizes who it is.]

Natalie shrugs and reaches up to redo her ponytail into a tight bun, vaguely smiling in Leo's direction. She doesn't recognize him from That Incident but that's really just because she is always thinking about a million things at once except when she's hard at work. ]

I'm just glad not to have a meathead partner this time. [ Which is a compliment, really. Natalie's already stretching her arms, trying to be friendly. ]

He takes the time to close the door behind him, and gestures for Raleigh to sit if he'd like.]

[ raleigh sits and runs through a list of words he might use to describe yesterday. easy? fun? entertaining? no, those probably wouldn't work. and he's kind of confused because this sounds a little like a lead-up to getting chewed out, but he's pretty sure that would've happened already if it was. ]

It was... [ come on, becket, think. ] Natural? I don't know. It just came easy, so Yance and I pushed it.

[ If Leo had something to throw, it would be flying straight at the guy's face right now. As it stands, he's lacking in projectiles, so he'll have to settle for wandering in wide circles while he waits for her - Goodman. Half a name is better than knowing her as "that girl". ]

[ The tone of his voice is dry, but understanding - he knows what's it's like to go up against those guys, and they're ten times as likely to go all out on him as they are her. It sucks, majorly, and makes him wonder why he's here at least five times more than the usual daily limit.

To be honest, though? Goodman here probably has just as good a chance at beating him as they do. He is absolutely failtastic at this fighting stuff. Not that he won't play up the bravado, of course. ]

But those guys are a piece of cake compared to me. You think you can handle that?

[ The trainer over there's not even trying to hide his mirth at that statement. It was meant to be sarcastic, though, so Leo just grins waits for Goodman to make the first move. ]
